Sabine Ulibarrí is a pioneer of Hispanic literature in the United States. He is from Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico, and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War 2. After being recognized for his service, he began a career in academia. He would pursue a doctorate and then began teaching at the University of New Mexico.

He is known for incorporating elements of Magical Realism into his works, and among the most famous is his "Mi Caballo Mago" which eloquently details the chase of a white horse by a juvenile boy as a symbol of adulting. His short stories, which transcend both cultural and linguistic boundaries, have inspired so many generations of younger Spanish-speaking American writers.
